With this year’s Betfred Cup well and truly under way, let’s have a look at this years competition, with current holders Ross County already off to a flying start with a 2-0 victory over Alloa, 6-0 whitewash away to Montrose and a bore 0-0 draw against Hibernian with the Dingwall club winning the bonus point after seeing the Edinburgh side out on penalties. Jim McIntyre has indicated that County are seeking to defend their League Cup winners title this year in an interview before the Hibs game on Friday night.
Meanwhile in Group H, Livingston have probably surprised themselves this year sitting top of the table after 3 games played. The newly promoted Championship side started their campaign against Premiership side Partick Thistle in a 1-1 draw with the Livi team winning on penalties to grab the bonus point. The side have also defeated St. Mirren 1-0 and Airdrieonians 2-0. I can’t see the form continuing once the season starts when their focus will be on staying up in the Championship.
Motherwell in Group F however, whom is in with a shout on winning this years competition, should definitely finish top of their group. They’ve been grouped with Morton, Queens Park, Edinburgh City and Berwick Rangers. I can’t see them dropping a single point throughout the group stages with already winning both of their matches so far with a 5-1 victory away to Queens Park and a 4-0 thrashing to Morton.
Over in Group B where Dunfermline lead the table and Hearts sit 2nd with a game in hand, the group could go either way when the two sides play each other on Saturday. Dunfermline without a doubt has been more convincing this campaign with a 5-1 win over Peterhead, 0-0 draw in East Fife with the Pars winning the bonus point in a spectacular penalty shootout which ended 9-8 to the away team, and finally a 6-0 win against Elgin City. Whereas Hearts would have probably expected more from their two victories so far, which have been a 3-0 win over East Fife at home and a 1-0 away to Elgin City to secure 3 points for the Edinburgh side.
Onto the best and worst performing team in the competition so far, and without a doubt I’d have to say Montrose have definitely been out of form to date conceding 14 goals in 3 games. (6-0 Ross County, 4-0 Hibernian and 4-0 Arbroath).
On the other hand, I feel that Dundee Utd have found form once again and the season looks bright for the Terrors this year, scoring 9 goals and conceding 1 to date. (2-0 Raith Rovers, 3-0 Buckie Thistle and 4-1 against Cowdenbeath).
My prediction for this years competition is that Motherwell have a very high chance of winning it this year.
